A building was being constructed, I heard men on scaffolding singing in Spanish. They were making the tedium of the day go by. Perhaps they were engaging in a form of catch-up mechanics. I was reminded of the rich tradition of work songs. Whether it was men on a chain gang building the blues, or men rhythmically canceling stamps in a far away post office; work songs echo across the globe, and they exist for the smallest audience, the other guys grinding through their work day. Everyone is waiting to go home.
lyrics
Men are singing in Spanish
Laying rebar and concrete
Songs of joy, lust and jealousy
Some are blunt, some are discrete
No matter the tune or the language
This building will still take shape
And the men who sang in Spanish
are elsewhere, changing another landscape
He doesn't sing karaoke in a bougie bar in a gentrified part of town
He doesn't sing lullabies at bedtime to help put the baby down His songs are for the other guys
Knowing, singing
Over the din of labor could
Echo all the way home and
Out of this neighborhood
He doesn't sing karaoke in a bougie bar in a gentrified part of town
He doesn't sing lullabies at bedtime to help put the baby down His songs are for the others
